Why I Love Dressup Games
Dressup games are certainly nothing new. In fact, I have loved the various forms of fashion games for much longer than most people have even realized they have been around. The journey through fashion games has been long, but fortunately it is been quite enjoyable along the way.
Dolls and Dressup Games
The earliest dressup games were Barbies – the only fashion doll available twenty odd years ago. The Barbie games were simple enough – plastic doll with a few outfits to choose from. I liked the ball gowns best of all and we could drag out the Barbies with the cars, horses and houses to all enjoy together. When the games got a bit blasé, we simply spiced them up a bit.
The best ways we added some life back into Barbie games was to make our own clothing. Not especially blessed with seamstress skills, most of my Barbie clothing was constructed of odd socks. The narrow crew neck of the socks made a perfect micro dress and we had socks in every color under the sun completing Barbie’s wardrobe.
Paper Dolls
After butchering Barbie’s hair more than a few times, I moved on to the next sort of fashion dolls – paper dolls and doll plates. Paper dolls are as educational as they are entertaining. I had an immense collection of paper dolls in all manner of dress and styles. The paper dolls were in book and you had to cut out all of the dolls and all of the clothing if you wanted to actually play with them. I collected the books from all kinds of different sources, primarily on family vacations.
Sometimes I cut out the dolls and other times I did not. But either way, I spent hours looking at the beautiful dresses of the Victorian era or imagined what it was like on the hot plains of Texas with my pioneer paper dolls. I had such huge numbers of paper dolls, they filled a small trunk and I still have them today.
Fashion Plates
After the paper dolls, I developed a love of fashion plates. The plates let you design your own dolls by simply positioning different raised pictures under a page of paper. Arrange the head, body and legs you want and then rub a crayon over the top to design a page of fashion. The end result is fashion of your very own, much like the dress up dolls we love today.
Dressup Dolls Today
Today there are plenty of Barbie and Bratz games, but the paper dolls seem to have moved online. Playing paper dolls now is a virtual thing. To play with the dolls, you select a doll base and then find the outfits you like to put on the doll. There is no cutting and pasting involved although I have found you have to dig a bit harder to find the historical aspects of the fashion dolls. But regardless, I love these fashion dolls as much as I have always loved dressup games.
Summary:
Dress up games have evolved from Barbie dolls, to paper dolls, to fashion plates and now online dress up games. As the way of dress up is done evolved, anyone has access to a wide variety of clothes to be use for dress up.
